Re: Daphne

I live in Tomahawk, WI. It's zone 3 here if you want things to live long. I
have been very successful with Daphne 'Carol Macke' as long as I cut red pine
boughs and make a 'tent' over it for the winter. The red pine branches curve
nicely around the plant yet keep air circulation within the 'tent'. When the
branches are lifted in the spring, the bush is somewhat flattened out but
within a couple weeks it is ready to roll with an abundance of fragrant
blooms. My Daphne is also planted in my sandy soil so a slow release
fertilizer is a must at least twice in a season. Having a Daphne is a
wonderful treat in any garden so it is well worth the extra fuss.

Is there any cultivar of Daphne that will grow this far north? (Zone 4,
Wisconsin). And is acid soil a must? Naturally, I lust after things
  that I can't have.
