Title: Re: St Bernard's Lily - correct nomenclature?

Don,

I found Anthericum ramosum with the common name Branched St Bernard’s Lily, too.  You’re correct that Anthericum liliago is the “true” St B’s Lily.  However, when a genus comes up at the RHS site with only 19 entries, of which 4 are syns, 2 are Name not found in literature, 3 are just Tentatively accepted names, and 2 are unchecked names. And then only one has a listed common name, welllll…you can’t blame the others for borrowing the moniker, can you?

The differences I can see  are that A ramosum is branched, where A liliago is not. A ramosum is listed as taller. And depending on which site you check, I’ve found some say A ramosum might be hardier.

Anyway, since I’d never heard of it, I was happy to stumble on any one of them.

I note that the some sources also refer to Anthericum ramosum as St. Bernard’s-lily or branched St Bernard's-lily, while John Bryan’s reference book “Bulbs” lists St Bernard's-lily as Anthericum liliago.  Is there some confusion over the correct name?

I was looking over the spring 2017 Odyssey Perennials catalogue

at www.odysseyperennials.com <http://www.odysseyperennials.com/>

and came across this item:

St Bernard's Lily, Anthericum ramosum

It looks very much like something I saw on some backroads in Ireland this past summer.  I had never heard of the genus before and when I checked the picture, it took me back to one of the more enjoyable parts of my trip.  It’s probably not the same plant, but I just had to order it. My old Hortus Third says it’s native to western & southern Europe – not a big hop to Ireland, eh?

So – does anyone on this list grow it or know it?  Anything to tell me about it?

Kitty
