Mark,
You are absolutely right! However, I find that in trying to get some clumps
out, it is SO easy to do damage to the neighboring plants that I prefer to
give selected grasses their own space. Some things like calamagratosis
acutiflora 'Karl Foerster', fescues, pennisetums (though they tend to seed
around), Hakonechloa, carex, blood grass, etc. are welcome in my perennial
borders and beds. It's just the larger grasses that I tend to banish from
the beds.
At this point, I find that I am rather drawn to the blood grass (Imperata
cylindrica rubra 'Red Baron'), Carex elata 'Bowles Golden' especially in
light shade, and blue oat grass (Helictotrichon sempervirens). I have all
of these growing in light shade in the company of hostas. They make such a
nice pairing--the thin blades of grasses with the thick, wavy leaves of the
hosta.
What are your favorites?
Thanks,
Ginny (zone 6)
