The trees that you're thinking about are called 'allelopathic.'  What
this means is that they secrete chemicals either through their leaves
or roots to limit the growth of other plants around them.  Two of the
most common ones are Juglans nigra (black walnut) and Platanus
occidentalis (Sycamore).
