The main secret seems to be size of plant and
packing.  And, you usually get what you are
willing to pay for.  If at all possible I try to buy
as to my area as possible.  If for no other
reason, the plants are pretty used to my climate
to begin with.  This has not made a difference
with roses, I would say, just perennials and
some vines.
