Sheila:
I believe you have to mix some moss in with the buttermilk. Our local
horticulturist suggest digging up some moss (the kind that just shows up
in damp, shady, acidic areas) toss it in a blender with buttermilk or
yoghurt, and spray the mixture on. Two things: you have to have the
right growing conditions (damp, shade, acid) for it to grow well, and I
understand that it smells pretty bad for awhile! :-) She suggests it
frequently when people complain that they can't get grass to grow
because it's too shady.
I haven't tried it, personally, because I already have tons of moss in
my yard!
