Care must be taken in using raised beds around any tree so as not to cut
of the roots from oxygen particulary with the heavy clay soil you say you
have. Also you must take into account the soil ph which in your case is
greatly effected by the type of tree. While light is a problem you also
need to address providing adequate moisture as any large tree is very
demanding.
With that many plants will tolerate these conditions such as epimediums,
pulmonaria, polygonatum, athyrium, and of course hostas. This might
sound strange but I would suggest taking a walk through the woods and
observing what grows naturally under oak trees.
