In general, it is suggested that many colors be separated by foliage
plants like Lambs Ear which has greyish or white leaves. Complimentary
colors are those on the color wheel that are opposite of each other.
Analogous colors are those which are in the same color family. I am a
color analyst and there is one planting in town of three azaleas that in
themselves would be beautiful except one is orange planted next to a pink
and it screams out at me. Blues, pinks, purples and whites can be
interspersed with lemon yellows in small quantities while orange, yellow,
white, can be interspersed with purples and some blues. Color in the border
should be harmonious, not glaring. An excellent book regarding color is:
Colors in Your Garden, by Penelope Hobhouse. She does an excellent job of
explaining the relationship of colors and plants. JC
