I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  What I would do to
achieve beauty may not appeal to you but here goes.  

I love monochromatic shadings which blend into another group of
monochromatic shadings.  I would get a color wheel and try shades of
primary colors next to one another, placed as they are on the color
wheel.  I would have an area with the more intense colors adjacent to
one another and a different area with the pastels.  

You are probably thinking "YUK!" That is because we have different
tastes.  None the less, the color wheel can be the best investment you
will ever make.  I learned to use one for art classes and find it is
great for gardens, house painting, decorating etc.
