Hello,
I had lady bugs in the window sills here in Ontario and they just
remained as dead bodies all last year. Guess it was the wrong place
to hibernate for them.
This summer I bought a lady bug house, tole painted. It looks like a
bird house only the front has large horizontal slats on it. Our grocery store was
selling President Choice lady bugs so I bought a package and put them
in the house. Well, it turns out that these lady bugs come from
California and want to return home from Canada. Not all of them made
it as they are in my neighbour's window sill this year and she is
laughing.
I also bought a butterfly house, tole painted but have not put it in
the garden yet. It is tall with 2 inch vertical holes for the
butterflies to go into and lay their coccoons. You can keep it in the
garage over winter.
I bought both as accessories for the garden to add colour and
conversation pieces.
Then I was watching Gardening Naturally on tv and Elliot told me I
have to buy my bugs from specialty places so they will stay in
Canada.
Good job I did not buy the praying mantis last year. I wonder where
they have to travel to?
