It realy depends on how much is needed and what sorts of plants are in
the beds, fir example, whether you have a lot of bulbs. I would strongly
suggest lifting out all the plants and double spade in the compost. that
helps the soil structure and compaction. But if this is too much work
for you, then you should apply the compost as a winter mulch, no more
than 1" applied uniformly across the surface. This can be supplimented
with a spring organic mulch (not a wood product and not additional
compost) Mulches are an important part of organic gardening.
