The way I start new beds in zone 8 is:  My husband runs the tiller over the area
and I rake out the grass behind him.  We repeat this process about 10 times until
I say STOP.  (He would dig to China, I think.)  The most important thing is to get
all the roots out. I don't mind pulling out the seedlings.  The roots are the hardest
to pull out, if you don't get them out initially.  I weed out the seedlings at least
weekly.  Even in established beds you will have that problem, forever.
