I have soap in plastic bags punched with holes (for longer life of the soap)
hanging from many of my ornamental shrubs and trees. I seem to have the most
trouble with deer eating magnolia flower buds. When I first read about using
soap years ago, Lifebuoy was recommended. More recently I have read that the
brand does not matter, and that does seem to be true for me. I use whatever
is cheapest at the time I am buying. Often that's Ivory.
Another deer deterrent is to place fencing, such as chain-link, flat on the
ground around what you are trying to protect--they don't like to walk on it.
Of course you can't do this in areas you are going to have to mow over.
