Re: New Beds in zone 8 -Reply

As part of my master gardener class we had a section on soil science
and a university professor from the agricultural department at Michigan
State agreed with you clay & sand is a recipe for concrete. To improve
ANY soil ---- compost, compost, compost. If you don't have enough of
your own be creative. I steal all the bagged leaves in the neighborhood
when they put them out for pick up. I also found a stable which gives
manure away for the asking. You will never regret spending a few
years amending your soil before you begin planting.

<< As for ameliorating the soil, try sand on the clay parts (I know you

you
 already tried that) >>
Be very careful with this. I'm not a soil expert, but I do know that
different areas have different kinds of clay. Our clay here in Ohio tends
to
form concrete with the addition of sand unless you apply an extremely
large
amount.
