RE: New Beds in zone 8


I like to improve my heavy clay (zone 9, Northern Spain) with ground pine
bark, not too fine. It should be added from time to time, as it decomposes
in the soil (raising humus content). I apply it liberally as a mulch: I like
the effect. It is nice stuff and easy to work into the heavy soil when this
is fairly 'dry' (above all, avoid mix when too wet). Here I got good
supplies of Pinus radiata (Monterey Pine) bark, I don't know about your
area...
