Ice

This has been a most remarkable two weeks. A three-day ice storm has
changed our landscape into what looks like a war zone (sounded like it too,
when the trees were falling). Obviously Nature is not concerned with
aesthetics when she prunes. Now that my electrical power is back (after 11
days) I can resume my catalog shopping (the sun sure does set early these
days and candle light just doesn't do it for reading).
Anyway, can someone tell me how this ice will affect my perennials? Last
year we had ice early on and I lost a few things that apparently smothered,
but we had no snow cover before the ice came. This year we have about 10
inches of snow left. Will this absorb the ice?
