Kishori & Brian, I've used alfalfa meal for the past two years
and am enthused. Its NPK ratio is (depending on the brand you
buy) about 3-1-1, but it also has growth hormones and trace elements,
according to my reference books. Also recommended as a soil conditioner.
It's helped me get good plant performance in beds with tree roots.
I use it in meal form -- sprinkle it on and fork it in in both
Spring and Fall. It works great for bulbs, especially tulips.
I use about two cups per 100 square feet. One bed that was already
pretty lush with shady stuff really boomed, requiring plant division
earlier than I'd planned. A little is better than a lot.
I use a lighter coating on the veggie & herb bed, but I do mostly
perennials. The meal form smells strongly of hay but is not distasteful.
