My beagle eats his and those of just about any other beast.  I constantly tug
at the leash to prevent this.  I am plagued by moles and when he stops and
cocks his head I know he's about to dig and I drag him off.  I don't know how
else to stop a beagle.  They are one of the most intelligent breeds, and one
of the most loving--one book describes them as "merry"--I always say mine is
"funny, cute and smart", but boy are they stubborn.  At least mine is.  

In short, I don't think you can stop this short of removing him from the
temptation.
