All of the doubles REQUIRE western exposure:
Royalty, (deep purple) Sieboldii (somewhat
tender), Duchess of Edinburg (sorry, white), etc.
I believe they are the only ones, according to
my source books, that require western exposure.
Probably to get them to fully open. But here
again, keep in mind, I think both of my books
on climatis are from the UK (i.e., cooler
summers than we have). Most of the rest will
do well there as well. I did have Royalty facing
east and it did not flourish. When I moved it
west, it was very happy.
Elsa Spath is a lovely purple I have growing in
a southern exposure. Royalty does hold its
color well west- facing, but then again it blooms
in May/June before it gets too hot (herein
Oregon, summer does not start until July, if
you're lucky). It does have some repeat bloom
(usually single) later in the season. My
solution is to grow a later blooming one
through it and will move my texensis "Duchess
of Albany" this year (it's not doing well where it
is). This is total speculation, but I would
imagine that any of the texensis would like
western sun because aren't they all out of
Texas?

i have a clematis (Nelly Moser or similar)
planted on the west side of
my house. First year last year -- and growth
was light, not vigorous.
I have since read in a gardening book that this
variety should be
planted on the north side of the house, since it
will fade in hot sun.
Would the same apply to "Jackmanii"? What
variety works best on west
side (i do shade the roots) -- and I am not
interested in a white
vine....
thanks
