Not necessarily!!! We have native plants that are shade and/or moisture
lovers and they will ONLY grow in those conditions. Of particular
interest are our many understory trees and shrubs. At any rate, this
vine in nature no doubt grows through trees and shrubs and thus is
shaded somewhat at the base. It can also therefore migrate around to
the side of the plant it's growing through. I would bet that in YOUR
climate, western sun might be OK, but maybe not in hotter and more humid
climates with less rain.
