Re: mulching perennials and thermometers

Nan-

I bought a minimum/maximum indoor/outdoor thermometer this Christmas. It
"talks" as well when you push a button, or will announce the temps
hourly (I shut that function off quickly!) or at a specified time like
an alarm clock. There is also a flashing snowflake symbol on the
display when the outdoor temp. falls to freezing (or a sun if the temp.
hits 100 F.) It runs on two AAA batteries and cost $30. It was from the
Wind & Weather catalog:

Wind & Weather
The Albion Street Water Tower
P.O. Box 2320
Mendocino, CA, 95460.
Phone No. 800-922-9463

I would bet that a scientific supply house (like Nasco here in Fort
Atkinson) would have them too. Or a gardener's supply catalog?

As for mulch, I have very few things I mulch and try to plant only what
is reliably hardy here--easy to say, hard to do with all the borderline
tempting treats in the catalogs. But it gets too expensive to have
"annual" perennials!
