Mushroom compost is what mushroom growers grow their mushrooms in. It is
largely manure that has been composted. A friend tells me that it is usually
treated, either steamed or with chemicals before it is sold. Mushroom growers
sell it after it is too spent to grow many mushrooms in. It is wonderfully
organic and does wonders for my typically SE Ohio clay soil.
It is not sold in garden stores as far as I know. And it may not be available
in all areas--I just don't know aobut this. However, to find it you have to
call a company that sells bulb (by the truckload) topsoil, mulch, sand, etc.
These are who the mushroom composts sell their finished compost to. My local
company charges the same for mushroom compost as they do for topsoil and
mulch. Frankly, I can't see why anyone would buy topsoil when you can get
mushroom compost for the same price and know what wonderful stuff it is, when
topsoil can vary enormously.
Good luck finding some.
