>Mushroom comopost is magic!
We agree that mushroom compost is a very good soil mulch/conditioner and
we use it whenever we can get our hands on it. Unfortunately it is
becoming increasing hard to come by, at least good quality compost, as
its popularity increases. Since mushroom compost is not a true recipe
blend but a by-product a lot of good or even bad stuff can go in it. Also
we have found there is now a lot of stuff out there advertised as
mushroom compost which really is not.
The important thing, as always, is to come up with a good source and stay
with it. Watch out for fly by night back yard hauler. True mushroom
compost is just that, a by-product of mushroom production. Make sure what
you are getting is coming from such a source.
We suggest when using it at first or from a new source keep it away from
tender plants until you are assured of the quality. We have experienced
problems with nitrogen burn for example when the mixture has not been
composted enough. Just a word of caution.
