We use two Min Max thermometers at the same time.
We use a 'control' thermometer that we never move, and then take the second
one and move it around. This way we have a sense of where temperatures are
'supposed' to be.....Although 'supposed' is a relative term and, all you
need though is one 'steady' (control) temperature from which to measure all
the other areas.
So far (in the past 3 months) have gotten some surprising results....places
where cool air backed up air drainage patterns got much colder than we
thought.
Oddly, and unfortunately, places where there are garden beds where we had
built stone walls backing stone raised beds that we thought would be
warmer, turned out to get very cold. Of course, that still is only air
temp, and as we all know, soil temps and drainage also play very important
roles in cold temperature survivability. But it does explain last spring's
'new growth kill' from a very cold night.
We put some of the thermometers under our winter covers in our nurseries
this year. It will be interesting to see what they say in the spring when
we take off the plastic/microfoam/plastic mulch.
