I grow both of these natives, and they're a couple of my favorites. You
should have no problem in zone 5.
Ruellia humilis is a prolific self-seeder, so in about five years you
will find them growing out of every crack and crevice in your walks,
edging, etc. They handle moist and dry conditions equally well, but
they do require a lot of sun.
Viola pedata is a little more picky culturally. They key to its survival
is good drainage and moisture. Amend the bed liberally with coarse sand
beforehand, but make sure that it can get water when it needs it.
