Re: Bulb augers

Kris --
The augers are really great!!!
Until you hit an underground root!
Very hard on the arm when you hit a few of these.
I have 3 different sizes & hard clay soil.
I try to put 2 or 3 bulbs per hole, choosing bulbs that bloom at different
times.
This method was suggested by Brent Heath when he spoke at our local garden
club last year.
He also talked about planting thousands of bulbs different places using an
ordinary garden trowel, pushing it in, pulling back on the handle, dropping
the bulb in & then stomping the spot down.
I have also seen a bulb tool with a long handle that you step on to make the
holes that might be nice, especially for larger bulbs such as hyacinth.
Brent also suggested shoveling out a spot 10 inches or so across & layering in
a wide variety of bulbs that bloom at different times.
I've done both depending on how much room I have between perennials or if I'm
naturalizing them in the yard.
Now if only I could figure out where they are when I go to plant things later
in the summer.
The augers can also be used to add fertilizer around trees & planting bedding
plants, etc.
