I have a few beds with what I call "Victory Garden soil", but I've worked hard
to get them to that stage. Yes, I can easily plant with a trowel in those
beds (when they are newly made I could nearly dig the hole with my
fingertips). Anyplace else around here that I want to plant something 8" deep
(like a daffodil bulb), a trowel just won't penetrate--I've got broken and
misshappen trowels to prove it.
