I've had very good luck using a hand trowel to plant my bulbs. I used
to go through two or three per year, but when I was in Maine a couple of
years back I bought two wonderful hand-crafted trowels. They weren't
expensive -- I think it was $13.00 each, and I've been using them
ever since. The "blade" on the trowel is fused directly to a steel
shaft which runs through the entire handle.
With it I can plant in our Illinois clay without any problems. And
in return, I clean, oil, and sometimes sharpen my trowels when they're
starting to look a little down. :)
So if you find a good trowel, spend the extra $$$. I could never have
planted those 1000+ bulbs without it!
