Isabelle:
I ordered my oakleaf hydrangea from Forest Farm
in Williams, Oregon and its thriving in dry
semi-shade. Their prices are reasonable.
There is a huge difference in prices often because
of the *size* of the plant they send you. I was
actually able to get a small, healthy plant cheaper
by mail; my local nursery carried larger, VERY
expensive plants of this type.
I am a fairly experienced gardener and never had a
lot of success with perennials from Wayside, Park,
VanBorgandine (wrong spelling), etc. Seeds,
bulbs and roses, climatis have been fine. For
perennials I always order from Heronswood, Forest
Farm and several others.

For mine is just a little old-fashioned garden where
the flowers come together to praise the Lord and
teach all who look upon them to do likewise.

As I'm sure is the case with all of you, I have been
receiving many
catalogues from mail order nurseries;
I've been looking for an oak leaf hydrangea, and
found one in Park's for
$13.95 and one in Wayside Gardens for $34.95;
now naturally I'd like to get the lower priced one, but
am afraid there will
be a corresponding difference in quality;
does anyone know why there should be such a big
difference in price, and
does anyone know whether Parks is good enough?
A few years ago I bought the Fairy rose, the
generic one, not the name
brand, from one of the cheaper catalogues; the
plants were just fine and
have lasted for years with very little attention;
the price I paid was a fraction of what the name
suppliers ask.
