I'm sure it would work if you sat the bag of potting soil  upright.
laying flat, I'm not sure you root system would have enough depth to it.

you could maybe brace the bag with some kind of stakes or sit it in a
large bucket, however it would have to be a good size container.
remember you have to have drainage.  I poked holes in the botton with
the knife
an idea I have for the coming year is    I have an old wheelbarrow that
has holes in the botton and I'm gonna paint it red,  fill it with
potting soil and plant  California Poppy's in it and park it in my front
yard,   now tomatoes might be ok in that   depending on the depth,
what you have to figure out is how to keep the bag of potting soil in an
upright position, then I think it would be great.  Imagine what a great
plant you would have planted in a bag of potting soil
I love the exchange of ideas that I have gotten from this list.  haven't
been a member but a few days now.
