Bill,
You'd be surprised at what is bagged nowadays. You can get quality soil
with slow-release fertilizers AND some with rotted manure! At a local
nursery, I buy bags of this soil for containers and use in the border when
I am planting new perennials. I don't remember the brand name, but these
soil mixtures are touted for use just for tomatoes or perennials or roses.
Claims that all of the first-year nutrients are included with the soil in
the bag.
Of course you can still get sterile soil, but I wanted everyone to know
that there are other choices.
