Fertilizer

I need help from all of you on fertilizer practices.
I tend to underfertilize, mostly because I am lazy and cheap. I spread
around slow-release fertilizer (is it Osmocote?) when I can, but it is
awfully expensive. But when I use the quick-release stuff, I don't remember
to spread it often enough, plus it is not easy to toss it on all the areas
in my garden readily because much of my garden is on slopes, so the
application rate is very uneven. When I have sprayed Miracle-Gro using the
hose attachment, I get very wet (rather than the plants) - it doesn't seem
to work right for me. And I only seem to remember after there has been a
lot of rain, and I know you shouldn't fertilize right after the plants have
been soaking in water.
I know that over-fertilizing is a sin, but I don't get remotely close to
that situation.
After last year's thread on alfalfa, I bought pellets and I'll try that.
I have also heard that lawn fertilizer can be a cheap solution for gardens.
Do you have any cheap and easy fertilizing solutions to share? And
environmentally sound? (We make compost which we mulch with, that not
enough to cover the whole garden.)
Can fertilizer be integrated into a drip irrigation system? I'm thinking of
setting up one of the DripWorks systems, and maybe that would solve my
problem.
Am I the only one with this issue?
Many thanks!
