Just thought I'd throw in my two cents about the
ethics of collecting seeds, cuttings, scions etc from other peoples
gardens.
I think it comes down to the manner in which
its done. I maintain a rather large public display garden at our local hospital
and health care units. I don't mind if people help themselves to bits of plants
as long as it is discreet. I don't want to have to come along after and
tidy up. And of course if the display is compromised then I would have to
say no.
Of course I'd rather people ask me first. That way
I get to talk with them about their interest and maybe learn/teach something.
But a little snip or pinch here and there hurts nothing. I specialize in
small plants, alpines and others and am always amazed how little damage is
done.
Somehow assisting the dissemination of the many
really good plants seems more important than jealously protecting the display or
collection. The overall varitiy of material grown in this part of
the world is really dismal. Of course I am not in the business of selling
these same plants and that would probably change my point of view
somewhat.
