Re: yellow and blue

Mary,

one other tall, blue suggestion that I recommend to everyone: adenophora
lilifolia, or ladybells. Grows about 2 feet tall, has campanula-like
flowers on tall stems like a foxglove. Campanulas can't take my summer
heat and humidity well, so these are the very best substitute. Blooms what
seems like forever because each flower opens up starting from the bottom to
the top of the stem. This takes a while to do. It's a gorgeous 'blue'
that I have here and there throughout the beds. Looks good with
everything, like blue tends to. Easy care, no fuss, will spread moderately
well. This is definitely one plant that I encourage to spread! It's super
easy to just chop off a chunk of the clump in the spring and plant it
somewhere else. Different combos that I have it with: yellow heliopsis
and red monarda, pink and yellow asiatic lilies, old-fashioned roses in
various pastels, pale pink malva and lemon-yellow daylilies, etc etc. You
can't go wrong with anything.

It's available from Bluestone Perennials for 3 @ $8.75. I think White
Flower Farm carries it, too, at $7 per plant. I recommend that you
purchase the smaller plants from Bluestone this fall. You'll wonder what
you ever did without it.
