Re: hellebore was Flowers out of season

Barb, not Janis here, but Hellebore hybrids (sold as orientalis) put
out one flush of new leaf growth as their blooms fade and that's it
for the year. They have a flush of root growth in late summer, early
fall. If you bought a small plant, it was likely a seedling and it
will put out more leaves next year. Depending on just how small and
young it was, it might take 3 years for it to bloom - that's how long
it generally takes from seed to bloom. The first year's bloom for
hybrids will not be lavish and may not be typical of what the plant
will do when it matures.

Should do fine on the east side of shrubs. I have a clump that is on
the north side of a huge Deutzia, only gets sun in winter and early
spring before the Deutzia leafs out, then it is in shade for the rest
of the season...happy as a clam for many years.

Hellebores do not like to be moved much...they resent disturbance, so
your best chance of getting yours to grow is to leave it be and give
it time:-)
