Here are some more ideas for the side garden:
With a raised bed (and a barrier to keep the neighbors happy :) ),
bamboo would work.  Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' looks
promising.  If you like fragrance, or cook, there is sheared Laurus
nobilis.  For spring flowers, espalier camellias.
