I was thinking on bamboo, but I was concern about the
runners. Due to the hardpan, I WILL NOT put in the
effort to place a fiberglass sheild around the bamboo
to keep the roots (runners) in.
My orignal thought was Bamboo, but I thought I would
build an above ground planting box. I would make it
18" deep and what ever wide and width. I would use
typar or typex as a interior liner between the wood
and soil. I would use allot of 2x6's to make sure it
was sturdy.

Hi Duncan,
There are many kinds of non-spreading bamboo available. We attended a bamboo
show a month ago and were amazed at the hundreds of varieties available--
spreading vs. clumping, different colors, heights, leaf styles, etc.
If bamboo is what you want, you should be able to satisfy your heart's
desires and still not worry about it spreading. And given the conditions you
are describing and the tenacity and low-maintenance of bamboo, it sounds like
a perfect solution.
