Gerbera Daisy

I just bought some Gerbera Daisies. I thought they were annuals, but I
just ran across them in the Bluestone Perennials catalog. The plant tag
didn't give much info and the catalog says:
'A glorious mixture of brilliant sun-like flowers. Can be lifted in fall
to continue to bloom indoors, or can be left out with good winter
protection....'
There is no zone mentioned anywhere. Have tried searching the web for
info, but haven't found what I'm looking for. Does anyone know anything
about this Daisy. What the zone range, or coldest zone; size; if I mulch
heavily with chopped leaves and maybe cover them with styrofoam cones,
will they survive my zone 5a winters. Or would it be safer to pot them
up and bring them inside (would prefer not to do this, if at all
possible - nowhere to put them). If I do this, should I treat them as
indoor plants or just keep them in the basement with minimal water, etc.
I bought them to put some temporary color into a new bed, but if there
is a way, I'd really like to 'hang onto to them'. Fell in love with the
vivid colors.
Thanks,
Karen
