We've had purple loosestrife overtaking ditches and ponds for several years
where I live in central Idaho. Last year they (the state??) tried putting
in a natural enemy of the loosestrife, I think it was a beetle larva? but
I'm not sure. Anyway, this year the loosestrife in the ditches along the
road I live in is down to one small patch. I could find out more about this
if anyone is interested.
Also, Lythrum and Lysimachia are both commonly called loosestrife, but
aren't even the same family. Lythrum is the culprit, not Lysimachia.
Although I've heard that some Lysimachias can be aggressive in the right
situation, they have nothing to do with the purple loosestrife problem.
