Cathy,
I love "Encyclopedia of Perennials" by Christopher Woods, but
perhaps that's only because it happened to be the first book I read when
starting my garden. Being rather insecure about my own taste, I
appreciated having his own opinions on which plants were gardenworthy,
which were "monstrous weeds," and what went well together.
I took a list of his favorites to the New England Wildflower
Society's annual plant sale to see if they had the ones I was missing.
The staff horticulturist commented, "Nice plants in this list," and one
of them sold at auction for a huge amount.
Note that there is only one edition from 1992 (although there has
been a second printing that took care of some typographical errors), so
the newest cultivars won't be listed.
Janet
