Re: blue and red crayons

Pat,

have you tried cannas or dahlias for true reds? The most common canna,
'The President', is a dead-on red. There are so many red dahlias that you
wouldn't have any trouble with those. I just love 'Bishop of Llandaff'
with the blood-red blooms and dark foliage.

What about asiatic lilies? Again, there are loads of red and orange ones,
but I do like 'Viva' and 'Red Velvet'. If you want some bold annuals, try
the common zinnias. They come in separate colors at Burpee or Shepherd's
Seeds and you would love the red ones. And don't forget chrysanthemums for
firey autumn colors!

For some absolutely dynamite red and orange color combos, try searching at
your local library or bookstore for Tony Lord's book "Best Borders". He
discusses the problems associated with making a "hot" border, the
differences in red and the problems with finding reds that have orange
overtones vs. violet ones. Also, he talks about making the two reds "work"
together using foliage. Once you see the borders in blazing color (and he
identifies varieties!), you'll be inspired. This is one of my favorite
books for dreaming.
