Re: Crocosmia 'Lucifer' IN z6A

I grow my dahlias and gladiolas in a seperate bed that I constructed a
couple of years ago down at the bottom of the driveway. It isn't really a
raised bed, because it's on the same level as the surrounding lawn, but what
we did was scoop out a huge divot in the side of the slope leading down to
the driveway, fill it with rock and sand to give it good drainage and then
top it off with a couple of feet of top soil. I don't grow anything in this
bed but tender bulbs, tubers and corms, so that I can dig up the whole bed
and store the plants in the fall. It works out pretty well. And I can grow
a lot of hot colours down there where they make a good display for those
passing by on the road, can be seen well from the house, but don't clash
with the more pastel notes of the main beds.
