We have fewer Japanese beetles this year but still have them around on lots
of things. Hollyhocks, a fancy tri-colored willow, abutilon, ferns (yes
ferns), and on the petals of many flowers pink being the favorite and good
saturated reds the least favored. I also squish these damned things. I
truly loathe JB's cutting off all rose buds after July 4th which is their
arrival date here.
They are unnatural to look at, are given to continuous public fornication and
inspire disgust in all gentle gardeners. They are impervious to death by
drowning, being able to swim for weeks in a rain barrel. I confess that I
do not mind this cruelty which I would not visit upon nearly any other
creature.
The only remedy for JB's and it is temporary is to cover the plant with a
fine dusting of rotenone which will prevent feeding until the next rain. It
is only half a victory as the plant is then white and unattractive. A great
fortune could be made on the East Coast by finding a way to wipe out JB's.
