I've determined the pest that is munching on my Astible plant as well as a
few others planted nearby - Japanese beetles! Now that I know my enemy,
I'll take appropriate action.
My technique against Japanese beetles is to have jars half-full of water
placed around the garden. Whenever I am out there, I inspect for beetles and
tap them into the jar. They appear to now recover once they are wet,
although I'm not sure how long they live while floating on the water. Last
year, after doing this for many years, there were almost none to be seen.
This year they're back in force. I find them always on roses, and this year
they're attracted to hibiscus and crepe myrtle. One year they would sun
themselves on the blades of some tall ornamental grasses. Another year they
sunbathed on the asparagus. They seem to change some of their likes and
dislikes from year to year. This year, one of the rugosa roses is their
primary target, and also some of the evening primrose.
Constant vigilance.
