Hibiscus mutabilis 'Rubrus'

Do any of you have this plant and know whether it is best to cut it back to
the ground in the spring, remove a third of the old wood, or essentially
leave it grow, if one wants a 6' -7' tall plant?  I can't seem to get a
consensus on this issue, and there is some damaged wood that depends on the
answer to this question.
