Crinodendron hookerianum grows very well in SE England as well.  There's an
enormous one at Wakehurst Place, been there years.  It is in the shelter of
a walled garden though,, sandwiched between the wall and a thick yew hedge,
so probably protects it from frosts.  I believe it grows well in London and
more frost free cities.
