When I was a beginning gardener with no money and a lot of space to fill
I did the same. Some perennials I got piles of plants out of and some
didn't come up at all -- no doubt I didn't understand enough about
stratification and the like-- but I was thrilled to be able to fill the
beds with things I had started myself.

That was 10 years ago and I still have shasta daisies, salvia Superba,
centranthus ruber, verbascum Southern Charm, echinacea and achillea out
of that experiment.
