Duncan,

Did you discover what the work "shake" means. I have seen many old trees in
the UK with props under old and heavy branches. An old tree is treasured by
gardeners there.

Just the past week, a old apple tree knocked my husband off the tractor mower
as he leaned to dodge a lateral sort of big old branch. It once had a prop
under it removed because of the tractor mower. Saturday he took chain saw and
cut it off, must have been revenge. All who ever heard me on grass know he
should have left all that grass alone. He thinks he fractured a rib, the tree
and I were right, to much grass around here. Anyway, did you discover the
meaning of a "shake".

If it is a support it would work as nothing grows under a huge old beech. I
wish someone had put a copper beech somewhere on my farm about one hundred
years ago. The foliage is wonderful alone in a vase.
