Curious about the term "shakes", I ran a Google search for
"dendrology+shakes". It appears to be term used most commonly for a type
of separation or splitting in cut wood (lumber)(ring shakes, transverse
shakes), but can be used to describe a splitting in live wood. I can't
offer up any info as to why this would happen on a beech tree. Maybe a
call to a local extension service for his area or a licensed arborist is
in order. It sounds like it could be dangerous is the tree is of any
size.
