I believe you pinch the seed which is probably black.  If there is a kernel 
in the seed, it is fertile.  Quite a lot will germinate if they fall on the 
ground.  You can also collect them and plant them in the spring using some 
cold treatment to get them started.  Growers use lights kept on 24/7 to 
increase the growth rate.

Love Pat is a hybrid so the progeny will be somewhat like it but probably not 
exact.  Hosta seedlings are very slow to progress to adult plants so you can 
put a few in a corner somewhere for a few years and have plenty of time to 
think about it.

There is on the Hosta site or one of the many Hosta sites more information as 
the growers can become quite technical on germination.  I have always found 
that they just pop up on their own, maybe more than you want so you could cut 
off some of the seed pods to reduce the number of seeds scattered around.
